Travelers to Tajikistan do not need to be immunized, but they should be vaccinated in Tetanus and Typhoid along with Polio, Hepatitis A and Polio. Malaria can also be found in Tajikistan, so it is a good idea to consult your physician local to get information on vaccinations.
Cultural Sensitivity
There are many opportunities to interact with the locals, all with their particular customs and practices. You are asked to be respectful and considerate to the locals. Your guides and tour leaders will always be able guide you in the right direction.
It is first important to note that Central Asia has a more flexible approach towards Islam than its neighbours in Pakistan and Afghanistan. But, it must be noted that it is technically a Muslim region , and thus some caution should be applied in certain areas. Although both genders are allowed to wear shorts and T-shirts in urban areas, they should not be wearing large sleeves or T-shirts. However, anyone visiting active mosques should wear pants that do not go below the knees, and tops which cover shoulders. The use of a head scarf is suggested for women. In this tour, we’re going to remote areas which are rarely frequented by tourists. Locals are extremely modest in their attire and you’re likely to feel more comfortable dressed in conservative clothes too.
Language & Religion
Tajikistan’s official language is Tajik. Russian is still used regularly to conduct business and for communication.
The majority of people adhere to Sunni Islam, with the minority of them following Russian Orthodox, Catholicism, Buddhism and Judaism.
Food and beverages
The menu on the tour tends heavily on soups, meat and potatoes. In remote areas and at higher elevations, vegetables are difficult to come by. But, there is a wide selection of dried nuts and dried fruits that are available to try.
With regard to alcohol, the options are generally limited to vodka and beer. Anyone looking for something else – Scotch or Gin for instance – must buy it duty free and bring it out. It can be difficult to locate mixer drinks such as tonic water.
